Nigeria eyes air ambulance system with airbus deal

Nigeria has taken a major step toward strengthening its emergency medical response system, as the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, opened high-level talks with European aerospace giant Airbus on the development of a nationwide air emergency service.

The initiative, described as an Integrated National Ground-To-Air Health Emergency Management System, is aimed at improving rapid response to critical medical situations across the country, particularly in hard-to-reach areas.

The move comes after securing approval from Bola Tinubu, signaling federal backing for the ambitious healthcare infrastructure project.

During his visit to France, the minister held discussions with senior Airbus executives as part of efforts to establish a functional and modern emergency air ambulance network for Nigeria.

The talks are expected to lay the groundwork for procurement and deployment of specialised helicopters tailored for medical emergencies.

On the sidelines of the engagements, Pate toured a government-supported air ambulance facility in Lyon, where he inspected an Airbus emergency care helicopter.

The visit provided firsthand insight into how advanced air medical services operate in developed settings.

Addressing Nigerians during the inspection, the minister outlined plans for what he described as a transformative system that would integrate ground and air emergency services, enhancing coordination and saving lives during critical incidents.

The proposed system is expected to significantly improve emergency response times, especially in rural and underserved communities, while also strengthening the country’s overall healthcare delivery framework.

The development underscores the government’s renewed focus on healthcare reform and investment in critical response infrastructure, as authorities seek to bridge longstanding gaps in emergency medical services nationwide.
