Bauchi APC stakeholders reject Gov. Mohammed’s planned defection

Fresh moves by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections have been firmly rejected by party stakeholders in the state, raising concerns over internal cohesion and political strategy.
The Bauchi APC caucus and other influential party figures on Tuesday convened in Abuja to deliberate on Mohammed’s proposed defection and unanimously opposed it.
Reading the resolutions after the meeting, Senator Samaila Dahuwa Kaila stressed that admitting the governor under the current circumstances would undermine the party’s unity, credibility, and electoral prospects in Bauchi State.
“The caucus is of the firm view that Governor Mohammed’s admission into the APC at this juncture would be detrimental to our party’s stability and cohesion,” Kaila said.
The stakeholders highlighted that the governor had previously made public statements critical of President Bola Tinubu and the APC, none of which had been retracted or reconciled.
They argued that overlooking these past positions could set a negative precedent and potentially alienate grassroots party members.
The caucus also condemned the apparent lack of consultation with key party stakeholders on such a consequential political decision, describing the omission as unacceptable and inconsistent with the principles of internal party democracy.
“Our position reflects the need for adherence to due process and respect for established party structures,” Kaila said.
“It will be formally communicated to party authorities for appropriate action.”
Reports indicated that Mohammed’s planned defection followed meetings with President Tinubu and senior APC leaders, during which discussions reportedly touched on power-sharing arrangements.
A key unresolved issue, however, is whether the governor would be permitted to nominate his successor in Bauchi State, a matter that has yet to be settled.
Despite the strong opposition from Bauchi APC stakeholders, sources suggested that Governor Mohammed has already concluded plans to formally join the party in the coming days.
The development is expected to intensify political maneuvering in the state as parties prepare for the 2027 elections.
