IGP Disu pledges modernisation, community-focused policing at National Police Day

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has reaffirmed his commitment to transforming the Nigeria Police Force into a modern, intelligence-led, and community-oriented institution, as he addressed officers and stakeholders during the 2026 National Police Day celebration at Eagle Square, Abuja.

Disu outlined a vision aimed at strengthening investigative capacity, leveraging technology, and deploying innovative strategies to tackle evolving crime patterns across the country.

He stressed that 21st-century policing goes beyond the use of force, highlighting intelligence, professionalism, and respect for human rights as foundational pillars of modern law enforcement.

“We are investing in training, technology, and community engagement. These are not future plans.

”They are actions in motion today,” Disu said, underlining the immediate steps being taken to reposition the force.

Central to his strategy is community partnership, which he described as essential to effective policing.

“The Police cannot succeed without the people, and the people cannot feel safe without the Police,” he stated, emphasising that security is a shared responsibility between law enforcement agencies and citizens.

Reflecting on the significance of National Police Day, the IGP noted that it provides an opportunity to honour officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, assess progress, and renew commitment to institutional reforms.

He assured families of fallen officers that their loved ones’ sacrifices would be commemorated through tangible improvements in standards, operational procedures, and welfare.

Disu also highlighted collaborative efforts between the police, the Armed Forces, and other security agencies in maintaining national stability, calling for sustained cooperation to address security challenges effectively.

Pledging a renewed focus on integrity, discipline, and public trust, the IGP declared, “This will be a new era for the Nigeria Police Force… where service is prioritised and trust is rebuilt.”

The theme of this year’s celebration, “Community Partnership: Building Trust,” underscores the administration’s commitment to reforming the force, fostering closer ties with citizens, and enhancing transparency in policing.

As the country faces rising security concerns, Disu’s address signals a deliberate shift toward modern, intelligence-driven, and people-centered law enforcement, positioning the Nigeria Police Force to meet the demands of contemporary policing.
