Nigerian Army refutes allegations of poor remuneration, welfare

The Nigerian Army has dismissed claims by dismissed Lance Corporal Rotimi Olamilekan—popularly known as “Soja Boi”—alleging poor remuneration and welfare for personnel, describing the reports as false, misleading, and sensationalised.
In a statement, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Apollonia Anele, on Tuesday clarified that Olamilekan was dismissed not for expressing opinions, but for repeated acts of indiscipline.
These included violations of military social media regulations, unauthorised media engagements, and misuse of military identity.
Anele emphasised that the dismissal followed due process in accordance with military law.
Addressing concerns over pay, the Army reaffirmed that all personnel were remunerated through a structured and transparent system based on rank and years of service, as outlined in the Manual of Financial Administration for the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
In addition to basic salaries, soldiers receive various allowances including uniform, ration cash, and operational allowances particularly for personnel deployed in ongoing operations such as Operation Hadin Kai.
Contrary to claims circulating online, Anele stated that personnel do not purchase their own uniforms or protective gear.
“All equipment and protective supplies are provided through established logistics systems to ensure operational readiness and safety of our personnel,” she said.
The statement also stressed the Army’s commitment to both discipline and welfare, urging the public to disregard unverified claims that could undermine morale and compromise national security.
“The Nigerian Army remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard the nation while ensuring the welfare of its men and women in uniform,” Anele added.
This response comes amid growing social media attention on Olamilekan’s allegations, which had sparked debates over the living conditions of Nigerian soldiers and their welfare systems.
The Army’s clarification highlighted its insistence on accountability and adherence to military procedures while countering what it perceives as attempts to distort facts and erode public confidence.
