Diri rallies Bayelsans ahead Tinubu visit

Governor Douye Diri has called on residents of Bayelsa State to turn out in large numbers to welcome President Bola Tinubu during his scheduled visit on April 10, 2026.
The governor made the appeal during an Easter Sunday service at St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Sampou, his hometown in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area.
He described the visit as a significant moment for the state, noting that it presents an opportunity for Bayelsans to demonstrate their tradition of hospitality.
According to him, the projects lined up for inauguration during the President’s one-day visit are pivotal to the state’s long-term development and economic growth.
He stressed that the occasion goes beyond ceremony, highlighting its importance in positioning Bayelsa for greater opportunities.
“I call on all Bayelsans to come out en masse to welcome Mr. President and accord him the hospitality that we are known for.
”It is part of our culture as Ijaw people to warmly receive our guests,” the governor said.
He further emphasised the need for unity and peaceful coexistence among the people, describing these values as central to the identity of the Ijaw nation.
“We are known for peace and unity. Let us continue to uphold these values as we move forward as one people,” he added.
Reiterating his administration’s commitment to development, Diri said ongoing infrastructural projects are aimed at boosting investment, tourism, and overall economic activity in the state.
Among the key projects to be inaugurated is a 60-megawatt gas turbine, which the governor described as crucial to improving electricity supply.
“Power is a major driver of economic growth, and this project is key to our development agenda,” he stated.
He also highlighted the importance of the 630-metre Angiama-Oporoma bridge, calling it a historic breakthrough for communities in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
“For over 60 years, our people in Southern Ijaw have had no road access to Yenagoa.
”This bridge changes that reality,” Diri said. “These are legacy projects that will positively impact our people and open up Bayelsa for greater opportunities.”
Reflecting on the Easter celebration, the governor urged citizens to embrace the message of love and sacrifice exemplified by Jesus Christ.
He encouraged unity and warned against actions that could undermine the spirit of the season.
“The lesson of the death and resurrection of Christ is that of love. God loves us so much that He laid down His life for us.
”We must therefore love one another, stay united, and avoid actions that contradict what we celebrate today,” he said.
