Lagos reopens Tolu schools complex, pledges education upgrade

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving education quality with the unveiling of the Tolu Schools Complex in the Ajegunle area of the state.
The project, which sits on about 11.7 hectares of land, comprises 36 public schools made up of 31 secondary schools and five primary schools within Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony on Thursday in Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said the project represents a major transformation of public education in the state.
He described the development as more than a renovation exercise, stating that it reflects a deliberate effort to reimagine public education in line with global standards.
“This was not just a historic regeneration; it was a courageous one.
”What we have built is a school for the 21st century,” he said at the event attended by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who represented President Bola Tinubu.
“Mr. President, what is being commissioned today is not just a facelift or a cosmetic intervention.
”It is a full reimagining of what public education should look like in a modern African city like Lagos,” he added.
Sanwo-Olu said the government’s goal is to ensure that no child is denied access to quality education, regardless of background or location.
“This is a sacred promise between the government and the people: that no child, regardless of where they are born, shall be denied the dignity of a world-class education,” he said.
He explained that the upgraded complex includes modern facilities such as an ICT and robotics hub, science laboratories for physics, chemistry, and biology, as well as vocational training centres designed to equip students with practical skills.
According to him, new classroom blocks have also been constructed, while 24 existing blocks were renovated to improve learning conditions and reduce overcrowding.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the Lagos State Government for the project, describing it as a bold investment in the future of Nigerian youths.
“We must continue to treat education not just as a social service but as a driver of economic growth,” he said at the ceremony.
Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, also praised the initiative, saying it aligned with national education priorities and demonstrates effective collaboration between federal and state governments.
“This stands as a powerful testament to what is possible when leadership is purposeful,” he said.
The Tolu Schools Complex was originally established in 1981 under the administration of former Lagos State Governor Lateef Jakande.
The latest renovation began in early 2024 as part of efforts to modernise public schools in the state.
