Bandits kill 5 forest guards in Kwara

Five forest guards, including a unit commander, have been killed in a deadly attack by suspected terrorists in Nuku community, located in Kaiama Local Government Area.
The incident, which occurred on Friday, was said to have thrown the community into chaos as armed assailants stormed the area, targeting the local security outfit.
In addition to the killings, the attackers reportedly destroyed motorcycles belonging to the guards and set several buildings ablaze.
Eyewitnesses said panic gripped residents as gunfire erupted, forcing many villagers to flee their homes in search of safety.
Security assets were also affected, with police patrol vehicles reportedly burned during the assault.
The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the attack in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Adetoun Ejire.
The command disclosed that tactical and intelligence-led operations had been launched to track down those responsible.
Reacting to the incident, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of the forest guards, noting that they lost their lives while resisting a midnight attack on their post.
He commended their courage and sacrifice, revealing that the guards had engaged the attackers and reportedly neutralised several of them during the confrontation.
“Their bravery and patriotism are commendable. Nothing can compensate for the ultimate sacrifice they made,” the governor said, extending condolences to the families and communities of the fallen guards.
He added that they would be remembered as heroes.
Governor AbdulRazaq also stressed that the attack highlights the persistent threat posed by armed groups to rural communities, urging security forces to intensify efforts and review strategies in tackling insecurity.
“I commend the efforts of the security agencies in this theatre and urge them to do more,” he said, while reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting the families of the victims.
In response to the worsening security situation, the governor announced the constitution of a special security advisory body, the Kwara State Security Strategy Committee.
The committee comprises retired senior military officers and top security experts tasked with strengthening the state’s security architecture.
Members include retired Major General G. A. Wahab as chairman, alongside other high-ranking former officers from the army, navy, air force, and police.
A senior civil servant, Shuaib Abdulganiyu, will serve as secretary.
The governor is expected to hold the committee’s inaugural meeting as part of renewed efforts to address insecurity across Kwara State.
