Abakaliki Diocese mourns Bishop Chukwu

The in has announced the death of its Bishop, Most Rev. Peter Chukwu, who passed away on Friday, April 10, 2026, at the age of 60.

The announcement was contained in an official statement issued on Saturday, by the Vicar General of the diocese, .

According to the statement, the late bishop was born on November 5, 1965, and was ordained a priest on July 3, 1993, after dedicating decades of service to pastoral work and the growth of the Catholic Church.

He was later consecrated and installed as the third Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese on August 19, 2021, where he served as the spiritual head of the diocese until his death.

The diocese described Bishop Chukwu as a committed shepherd known for his strong focus on evangelisation, pastoral care, and the strengthening of faith communities across the region.

It added that his leadership left a lasting impact on both clergy and lay members of the Church, urging the faithful to continue praying for the repose of his soul.

Funeral arrangements, according to the statement, will be announced in due course.

Meanwhile, tributes have continued to pour in across the state and on social media, with many describing the late bishop as a devoted spiritual leader who served with humility and dedication.

Governor of Ebonyi State, , described Bishop Chukwu as a “spiritual colossus” whose life embodied humility, sacrifice, and service to God and humanity.

He said the bishop’s passing marks “the end of an era of profound spiritual guidance, moral clarity, and fatherly leadership in Ebonyi State and beyond.”

The governor added that the late cleric was widely respected as a promoter of peace, justice, unity, and love, noting that his legacy would continue to inspire the faithful.
