Ondo communities protest rising killings, kidnappings in Akure

Residents of Imafon, Igushin, and Ilado communities in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State staged a protest on Saturday, over a renewed wave of violent attacks that has left at least two people dead and several others injured.
The angry protesters, who came out in large numbers, blocked the busy Shoprite intersection near the Governor’s Office in Akure, causing major traffic disruption as they expressed frustration over what they described as persistent insecurity in their communities.
Tension reportedly escalated on Thursday, April 9, 2026, when suspected bandits invaded Igushin community in a failed kidnapping attempt.
During the attack, a poultry farm owner and her daughter were killed.
Less than 24 hours later, armed men struck again in Ilado, abducting a young man who was reportedly attacked while trying to escape.
Speaking during the protest, a youth leader identified as Kunle condemned the continuous attacks across the Akure axis, including areas close to the state capital.
He also questioned the management of the state’s security vote, saying that despite significant funding, there has been little improvement in safety.
“We are protesting the incessant killings and kidnappings.
”We are tired of burying our people every week while those responsible for our safety appear helpless,” he said.
Kunle also criticised the lack of visible security presence in affected communities, alleging that armed attackers operate freely without adequate response from security agencies.
The protesters warned that they would continue demonstrations until concrete steps are taken by authorities to restore peace and ensure the protection of lives and property.
The protest reflects a growing pattern of public anger in Ondo State in recent months, driven by repeated cases of kidnappings and killings across several communities.
