Man City crush Chelsea to boost title push

Manchester City reignited the Premier League title race with a commanding 3–0 victory over Chelsea, delivering a dominant second-half performance that narrowed the gap on leaders Arsenal.

Managed by Pep Guardiola, City turned the game around after a sluggish first half, scoring three goals in a blistering spell after the break at Stamford Bridge.

Nico O’Reilly opened the scoring before Marc Guehi doubled the lead within six minutes, while Jeremy Doku sealed the emphatic win.

The result came at a crucial moment, as Arsenal suffered a shock 2–1 defeat at home to Bournemouth a day earlier, allowing City to close within six points of the summit with a game in hand.

Attention now turns to a potentially decisive clash between City and Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on April 19.

City’s resurgence continues a strong run of form, having already defeated Arsenal in the League Cup final and dismantled Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Their title ambitions, which had appeared uncertain following consecutive draws against West Ham and Nottingham Forest, now look firmly back on track.

The first half against Chelsea, however, suggested a missed opportunity. Guardiola’s side lacked rhythm and cutting edge, while the hosts threatened sporadically.

But a decisive half-time team talk transformed City’s approach, setting the stage for a clinical second-half display.

If City secure victory against Arsenal next weekend, they could move within three points of the leaders, intensifying pressure on Mikel Arteta, whose side have previously faltered in tight title races.

Chelsea, under new manager Liam Rosenior, continue to struggle for consistency.

After an encouraging start that saw four consecutive league wins, the Blues have now managed just one victory in their last seven matches, including three straight defeats.

The London side were once again without Enzo Fernandez, following Rosenior’s controversial decision to drop the midfielder amid speculation over a potential summer departure.

Chelsea have not beaten City since the 2021 Champions League final, and their recent form has raised concerns about their push for a top-five finish.

Sixth-placed Chelsea now sit four points behind Liverpool in the race for Champions League qualification, and their lacklustre performance against City did little to inspire confidence.

The hosts started poorly but nearly took the lead when Marc Cucurella had a goal ruled out for offside. Pedro Neto also tested City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma with a powerful effort.

City’s first real chance came after 35 minutes when Bernardo Silva met a cross from O’Reilly, only for Robert Sanchez to produce a fine save.

The breakthrough arrived in the 51st minute, with Rayan Cherki providing an inswinging cross that O’Reilly headed home from close range.

Cherki then turned provider again just six minutes later, weaving past several defenders before delivering a precise pass to Guehi, who finished clinically into the far corner.

City capitalised on defensive lapses for their third goal in the 68th minute. A misplaced pass from Sanchez to Moises Caicedo was intercepted, allowing Doku to surge forward and fire home, capping a dominant display.

The victory underlines City’s reputation for peaking in the final stretch of the season and sets up a thrilling conclusion to the title race.
