INEC receives 110 applications for new political parties

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has disclosed that the commission has received letters of intent from 110 associations seeking registration as new political parties.
He stated this at the second regular consultative meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) held at the INEC Conference Room in Abuja on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.
According to him, the Commission is diligently processing the requests in line with the procedure outlined in the law as well as the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for the Registration of Political Parties.
He assured Nigerians that the Commission would operate strictly under the law and in fairness to all associations seeking registration as political parties.
The INEC chairman also briefed the CSOs on the upcoming Anambra State Governorship election, which is scheduled to hold on November 8, 2025.
He urged the CSOs to promptly upload their applications for accreditation of observers for the election, assuring that the Commission would process and deliver their accreditation tags well ahead of the election.
On the Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Yakubu stated that the primaries would end on June 30, 2025.
He added that the Commission was working to ensure a smooth electoral process.
Yakubu also disclosed that the Commission was finalising details to resume the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) and conduct outstanding bye-elections, which would be made public in the next 24 hours.
The INEC chairman reiterated the Commission’s commitment to transparency and fairness in all its activities, including the registration of new political parties and the conduct of elections.
He urged the CSOs to continue to support the Commission in its efforts to promote credible and peaceful elections.
In his remarks, Professor Yakubu also released the full list of the 110 associations seeking registration as political parties, indicating their proposed names, acronyms, addresses, and the names of their pro tem Chairmen and Secretaries.
The list has been uploaded to the Commission’s website and social media platforms for public information.
