Power is transient: El-Rufai cautions APC leaders

Former Governor of Kaduna State and member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) opposition coalition, Nasir El-Rufai, has sent a message to the leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), reminding them that power is transient and will eventually come to an end.
El-Rufai made this statement on Thursday in Abuja during the public presentation of Mohammed Adoke’s memoir, “OPL 245: Inside Story of the $1.3 billion Nigerian oil block”.
“I appeal to those in power today to remember that their time will soon end and other people’s time will come. Power is transient,” El-Rufai said.
El-Rufai praised Adoke’s book as a necessary documentation of a critical national saga, stating that such works would help “set the record straight” and encourage truth-telling and accountability in public service.
The statement would serve as a warning to the APC leaders to be mindful of their actions and decisions while in power, as their time in office is limited.
The book presentation, which drew key political figures, legal minds, and civil society actors, discussed the controversial Malabu oil deal and its implications on Nigeria’s justice and governance systems.
El-Rufai’s message can be seen as a veiled warning to the APC leaders, urging them to prioritise good governance and respect for democratic institutions.
As a member of the opposition coalition, El-Rufai’s statement may be aimed at highlighting the importance of accountability and transparency in governance ³.
It’s worth noting that El-Rufai recently defected from the APC to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), citing the APC’s lack of internal democracy and governance concerns.
This move has sparked debate among Nigerian politicians and analysts, with some viewing it as a strategic attempt to unify opposition forces.
