2027 Elections: Omisore questions unity of opposition coalition

A former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Iyiola Omisore, has expressed skepticism about the opposition coalition’s chances in the 2027 general elections.
Despite the coalition’s growing momentum, Senator Omisore believed internal power tussles among key figures could undermine its unity and effectiveness.
He said this on Wednesday’s edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today, pointing out that prominent figures within the coalition, including Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and Nasir El-Rufai, have all expressed interest in the presidential ticket.
The former deputy governor of Osun State, questioned whether these individuals would be willing to work together, given their competing ambitions.
“Politics is not mathematics; it’s reality,” Omisore said, emphasising the unpredictability of political alliances.
The former APC scribe argued that the coalition’s key members have not been able to secure victories in their respective states, which he believed undermined their chances at the national level.
He cited examples of APC’s past electoral successes despite the presence of strong opposition figures in certain states.
Omisore suggested that the opposition coalition might serve as a distraction for its members, keeping them occupied while the APC strategises and prepares for the next elections.
“To an extent, it’s going to keep them busy. But as they are getting busier, we will look at our strategies and strategise as well and look for the best ways to cut them off,” he said.
The opposition coalition was formed at a meeting on July 2 at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, where leaders of various political factions adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their unified platform.
The coalition included prominent figures from the Labour Party, PDP, and SDP, among others.
While some have praised the development as a potential turning point, others, like Omisore, remain skeptical about its impact.
