JAMB not scrapped, still central to admissions — Education

The Federal Ministry of Education has debunked false media reports claiming that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is no longer required for admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations, quoted Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, as describing the claims as “false, baseless, and misleading.”
“For the avoidance of doubt, JAMB remains the statutory and legally empowered body responsible for conducting entrance examinations and coordinating admissions into all tertiary institutions in Nigeria,” the Minister said.
Dr Alausa stressed that no directive had been issued by the Ministry altering JAMB’s role or removing its powers.
He reiterated that JAMB’s admission procedures remaini fully operational and legally binding.
The Ministry urged the public, especially prospective students, parents, and tertiary institutions — to rely only on official communication channels from the Ministry or JAMB for credible updates on admission processes.
“We are committed to ensuring transparency, fairness, and credibility in Nigeria’s tertiary education admission system,” Dr Alausa stated.
The Ministry also called on media organisations, bloggers, and online platforms to verify claims before publication to avoid causing unnecessary panic and confusion in the education sector.
The statement emphasised that JAMB remains “central and indispensable” to Nigeria’s higher education framework and urged the public to visit official websites and verified social media accounts for accurate information.
