FG takes step to reclaim and revitalise 157 model almajiri schools

The Federal Government has begun the process of bringing 157 model Almajiri schools under its direct supervision as part of a broader effort to modernise and institutionalise Almajiri education nationwide.

These schools were originally established during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

Nura Muhammad, spokesperson for the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Education (NCAOOSCE), told NAN that the recovery initiative is aimed at restoring oversight and ensuring that the schools are properly managed before rehabilitation work begins.

Muhammad highlighted that previous reforms faced significant hurdles, particularly the failure to fully involve Alarammas, the traditional Qur’anic teachers who play a central role in the education of Almajiri children.

He noted that, at the time, the schools operated under the Ministry of Education without an enduring institutional framework, limiting the effectiveness of the program.

“The original program was well-intentioned, but its impact was hampered by a lack of structural support and insufficient engagement with key stakeholders.

“With the establishment of the National Commission, backed by law, and the recent adoption of a National Policy on Almajiri Education, we now have the tools to address these challenges and strengthen the system, ” he said.

The spokesman added that the government was committed to eliminating outdated and harmful practices associated with the Almajiri system while providing an environment where students can access both modern and traditional education.

All schools under the program would soon be fully integrated under the Commission’s management, paving the way for renovations and improvements to meet contemporary educational standards.

Muhammad also praised former President Jonathan’s vision in setting up the model schools, describing the initiative as a significant step toward reforming Almajiri education in Nigeria.
