President Tinubu departs for Japan, Brazil ahead of Tokyo conference

President Bola Tinubu has embarked on a diplomatic journey to Japan and Brazil, accompanied by key government officials, including ministers and special advisers.
This two-nation trip is aimed at strengthening economic ties, attracting foreign investment, and positioning Nigeria as a major player in global economic discussions.
President Tinubu will attend the TICAD9 summit in Yokohama, Japan, from August 20 to 22.
Tinubu will stop over in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, before proceeding to Japan, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga had said.
According to him, “In Japan, President Tinubu will attend the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in the City of Yokohama from August 20 to 22.
“In addition to attending plenary sessions on themes linked to the conference, the Nigerian President will hold bilateral meetings and meet the chief executive officers of some Japanese companies with investments in Nigeria,” Onanuga said.
The conference theme is “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa,” focusing on Africa’s economic transformation, private sector investment, innovation, and building sustainable societies.
These discussions aimed to explore new areas of economic cooperation and potential expansion of Japanese business interests in Africa’s largest economy.
The President’s visit to Japan is expected to yield concrete agreements with Japanese companies in sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, and technology, as well as potential partnerships to enhance Nigeria’s technological capabilities
After the TICAD9 summit, President Tinubu will travel to Brasilia, Brazil, for a two-day state visit from August 24 to 25, at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Tinubu will hold high-level bilateral discussions with President Lula da Silva, attend a business forum with Brazilian investors, and witness the signing of agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at boosting cooperation between both nations.
The Nigerian delegation will explore multiple avenues for strengthened cooperation between Africa’s most populous nation and Latin America’s largest economy.
The visits aim to attract foreign direct investment, diversify Nigeria’s economic partnerships, and leverage international cooperation for technological advancement.
The diplomatic missions will also focus on addressing shared global challenges, including climate change and food security.
