Decades of Neglect: Ndokwa nation demands justice

The Ndokwa nation has renewed its call on the Federal Government to revisit and resolve the legitimate demand regarding the quantum of oil and gas resources bein
The call is contained in a statement jointly signed by ‘NdokwaProject2027’ Convener, Mr. Kingsley Ekeh, Secretary, Mr. Ebenezer Ndijekwu, and the Publicity/Media Coordinator, Mr. Abandy Nwachukwu.
The statement noted that for over two decades, the Ndokwa people had consistently agitated for fair recognition and equitable returns from the enormous oil and gas wealth derived from their territory.
According to the group, ”The Ndokwa nation has hosted several oil and gas companies, including the defunct Agip Oil Company (now Oando Oil & Gas).
”Today, nearly 10 oil and gas companies operate within Ndokwa land, contributing significantly to Nigeria’s energy security.
”However, despite their crucial role, the Ndokwa people continue to suffer from environmental degradation, economic deprivation, and socio-infrastructural challenges, ” the statement said.
It added, ”the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) reports and the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) clearly mandate oil and gas operators to mitigate their impacts and contribute directly to the development and welfare of host communities.
”Unfortunately, the Ndokwa people remain grossly marginalised despite being among the largest gas-producing regions in Nigeria.
”In light of this, the Ndokwa Project 2027 has put forward a set of demands to the Federal Government, seeking to address the historic neglect and ensure equity and fairness in the distribution of oil and gas resources.
”The demands include, the quantum of oil and gas resources derived from Ndokwa territory must be adequately factored into allocation considerations to ensure the people benefit equitably.
” The oil and gas companies operating in Ndokwa must invest directly in sustainable projects that improve the quality of life of the people, in line with the PIA and EIAs.
” The new allocation formula must prioritise oil- and gas-producing communities like Ndokwa to guarantee justice and development.”
The group reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of Nigeria, but equally insisted that equity, justice, and development must guide the distribution of their commonwealth.
By addressing the historic neglect and ensuring fairness and equity, the Federal Government could strengthen national unity and promote peace and stability in oil-producing regions.
