UN condemns killing of 63 persons in Borno, demands probe

The United Nations has strongly condemned the killing of 63 people, including five soldiers and 58 civilians, in a deadly attack by suspected Boko Haram insurgents on Darajamal village in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.
In a statement, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator, Mohamed Fall, while commiserated with the families of the victims of the attack, asked the Nigerian authorities to arrest the perpetrators of the attack.
The attack, which occurred on Friday evening, left 63 people dead and an unknown number abducted, with many others fleeing with injuries.
The insurgents also burnt down over 20 houses, vehicles, foodstuffs, and other valuables belonging to resettled Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
Fall, described the incident as “appalling” and urged Nigerian authorities to arrest the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
Fall further called on security authorities to apprehend the perpetrators of the heinous attack and swiftly bring them to justice, while also demanding the immediate release of all abducted persons.
He also extended condolences to the families of the victims and the people of Borno State, wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
The UN official highlighted the rising toll of violent attacks and insecurity in Borno State this year, with multiple attacks recorded, leading to hundreds of civilian deaths.
The UN reaffirms its commitment to continue supporting people affected by conflict in the region, in collaboration with Nigerian authorities.
The organisation emphasised the need for all parties to the conflict to protect civilians and adhere to international humanitarian and human rights law.
