Ohanaeze decries Southeast exclusion from gas projects

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide Forum of State Presidents has strongly criticised the Federal Government for what it described as the continued exclusion of the Southeast from Nigeria’s national gas infrastructure development.

Speaking at a press briefing held in Awka on Saturday, the Rivers State President of the group, Mr. Livingstone Wechie, called on the government to urgently extend gas infrastructure to the Southeast, noting that the region hosts some of the country’s largest natural gas reserves.

“It is unacceptable that a region so rich in gas resources is left out of major infrastructure projects.

“This pattern of neglect only deepens the sense of marginalisation felt by our people, ” he said.

The group stressed that inclusive development is vital for national unity and urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene by ensuring the Southeast is fully integrated into ongoing and future gas pipeline initiatives.

Beyond infrastructure concerns, Ohanaeze renewed its call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), stating that his prolonged detention continues to stir unrest in the region.

“We urge President Tinubu to show statesmanship and facilitate Kanu’s release in the interest of peace and reconciliation,” Wechie stated.

While commending the President for establishing the South-East Investment Company and the South-East Development Commission, Ohanaeze leaders said more deliberate steps were needed to foster inclusive governance and economic empowerment for the Igbo people.

Wechie also lauded Southeast governors, particularly Professor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra and Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi, for championing regional cooperation.

He called on political leaders across the region to unite around key issues, including Kanu’s release and federal infrastructure equity.

The group also backed the proposed creation of Anioma State and urged the National Assembly and the President to give the matter serious consideration.

Ohanaeze encouraged Igbos at home and abroad to actively engage in the ongoing voter registration exercise to strengthen their political voice.

The group commended Senator John Mbata, President of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, for his commitment to unity and the collective interest of the Igbo people globally.
