Governor Yusuf orders Emirs to sustain Kano durbar festival

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has instructed all Emirs across the state to continue hosting the annual Durbar festival as part of efforts to safeguard and promote Kano’s centuries-old cultural identity.
The directive was issued on Saturday during the opening ceremony of Kanfest (Kalankuwa) 2025, the state’s grand cultural showcase held in Kano.
Governor Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to investing in arts, culture, and tourism, describing them as essential drivers of social unity, youth empowerment, and economic diversification.
He emphasised that the Durbar, a traditional horse-riding procession deeply rooted in Kano’s history, must be preserved and projected globally as a symbol of northern Nigeria’s heritage.
“The government of Kano State remains fully committed to supporting the Emirates in keeping this proud tradition alive and vibrant for future generations,” Yusuf stated.
In his remarks, the Emir of Kano and Chairman of the State Council of Emirates, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, commended the state government for reviving and sustaining the cherished customs that define the Kano people.
According to the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, the three-day event will feature an array of activities, including exhibitions of traditional cuisine, cultural performances, drama, crafts, textiles, pottery, and academic presentations.
The festival is expected to attract traditional title holders, members of the diplomatic corps, artisans, cultural groups, investors, and young creatives from across the country and beyond, reinforcing Kano’s reputation as a hub of cultural excellence.
