Late Dokpesi honoured for media role in democracy

Tributes poured in for late media mogul, High Chief Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi, on Saturday as stakeholders remembered his pivotal role in safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy during the alleged third-term saga of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The encomiums were delivered at the 2nd Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi Diamond Lecture, jointly organised by DAAR Communications and the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), under the theme “Communication and Development.”

Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, recalled how High Chief Dokpesi used his media influence and personal interventions to counter the third-term agenda.

“Dokpesi personally called lawmakers, explained why the agenda was dangerous, and quietly ensured it did not succeed,” Momoh said.

He lamented that Dokpesi had not received the recognition he deserved for his efforts.

Former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole also praised Dokpesi’s legacy, noting that he made his media platforms, including Africa Independent Television (AIT) and Raypower FM, available to lawmakers without charge, promoting accountability and national discourse.

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa highlighted Dokpesi’s contribution to democracy while lamenting growing political sycophancy.

NIPR President Dr. Ike Neliaku described him as a visionary who transformed Nigerian communication, giving voice to the voiceless and connecting leaders with citizens.

The lecture celebrated Dokpesi’s enduring influence in media and public life, cementing his place as a defender of democratic values in Nigeria.
