RMAFC reaffirms commitment to oil and gas host communities

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that communities hosting oil and gas operations in Nigeria receive fair and equitable benefits from resource exploitation.
This assurance came from RMAFC Chairman, Dr. Mohammed Shehu, during a meeting with a delegation from the Host Communities of Nigeria Producing Oil and Gas (HOSCON) in Abuja.
The chairman commended HOSCON for its peaceful advocacy on resource allocation and environmental justice in oil-producing areas.
Dr. Shehu stated that the commission would thoroughly review HOSCON’s position paper and collaborate with relevant stakeholders to establish a transparent framework for the disbursement and use of the 13 percent derivation fund, which is intended to benefit host communities directly.
“We are committed to fairness and inclusivity in the management of resources, and we will work closely with all parties to ensure that host communities see tangible benefits from oil and gas operations,” he said.
HOSCON Chairman, Prince Michael Emuh, described the meeting as a “new dawn” for host communities that have historically been marginalized.
He expressed optimism that closer collaboration with the commission would lead to meaningful improvements in social and economic development within oil-producing areas.
RMAFC Secretary, Mr. Joseph Nwaeze, echoed the chairman’s sentiments, urging HOSCON to seek legislative backing to strengthen the 13 per cent derivation fund framework.
He highlighted the need for continuous dialogue, constitutional reforms, and strong collaboration among government, communities, and stakeholders to ensure equitable participation and transparency in resource management.
“Through partnership and legal support, we can ensure that host communities are not only consulted but are active beneficiaries of the nation’s oil and gas wealth,” Nwaeze added.
