Delta Speaker, former classmates donate learning materials to DELSU

The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Dennis Guwor, on Friday, returned to his alma mater, Delta State University (DELSU) Abraka, in the company of his former classmates from the 2005 Religious Studies graduating class.

The visit featured the donation of books, teaching aids, and other educational materials to the Department of Religious Studies and Philosophy.

Guwor and his classmates were received by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Asagba, and senior university officials.

Following a tour of the department’s facilities, Guwor formally handed over the donated items, which included hundreds of textbooks, digital learning kits, projectors, assorted stationery, and a public-address system.

The group also pledged to undertake major renovations of the department’s aging lecture building.

Expressing gratitude, Guwor said, “It is humbling to return to the place that shaped our worldview two decades ago.

”These donations are a small token of appreciation for the foundation we received and a pledge by our class to continue investing in the next generation of scholars.”

He also highlighted the alignment of the initiative with the State Government’s commitment to education.

The speaker noted that the contributions were expected to enhance research output and improve the learning experience for current students.

“This gesture reinforces Delta State’s broader agenda of ‘Renewed Hope for MORE’ through education and community empowerment,” he said.

The speaker commended the Vice-Chancellor and the university management for their efforts in raising academic standards, and singled out his former project supervisor for special appreciation.

Also, his Class Coordinator, Mr Bartholomew Akwalhigbe, reflected on the challenges faced by students two decades ago, citing outdated textbooks and limited resources.

“Seeing our former classmate, now a lecturer in the department, receive these books is truly gratifying,” he said.

Responding, the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Asagba lauded the initiative, describing the department as “a beacon of inter-religious understanding and academic excellence.”

He assured the alumni that the materials would be fully utilised and expressed hope for an ongoing partnership.

“We welcome this spirit of giving and look forward to more collaborative projects benefiting both the university and the wider Delta community,” he said.

The event ended with the Speaker and his classmates exchanging pleasantries with former lecturers and capturing the moment in a group photograph.
