Delta North lawmakers dismiss claims of changing Anioma State capital

House of Representatives members from Delta North have firmly rejected circulating claims that Asaba may no longer serve as the capital of the proposed Anioma State, calling the rumour baseless and harmful.

In a joint statement released by lawmakers Ngozi Okolie (Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency), Victor Nwokolo (Ika Federal Constituency), and Nnamdi Ezechi (Ndokwa/Ukwuani Federal Constituency), the trio described the speculation as “divisive, unpatriotic, and completely out of tune with the aspirations of the Anioma people.”

The legislators stressed that the selection of Asaba as capital was not made hastily or in response to current political dynamics, but was the outcome of decades of dialogue, cultural considerations, historical agreements, and broad political consensus among the various Anioma groups.

They emphasised that the project of creating Anioma State is a collective aspiration rather than the agenda of any individual or interest group.

As such, they warned that no single actor has the authority to alter long-established agreements endorsed by all Delta North communities, including Aniocha, Oshimili, Ika, and Ndokwa/Ukwuani.

The statement also criticised those driving what it called “opportunistic agitations” designed to spark controversy and gain personal political recognition.

”Any attempt to reopen the question of the state capital, they argued, is an affront to Anioma unity and cultural identity.

According to the lawmakers, the boundaries and capital of the proposed Anioma State remain settled issues, and Asaba “stands—without controversy—as the historically agreed capital.”

They urged residents to disregard misinformation and remain focused on the broader goal of securing Anioma State.

The representatives assured their constituents that they remain committed to advancing the long-standing demand at the National Assembly and will continue to represent the people’s interests with clarity and resolve.
