Delta rail users lament prolonged station closure

Commuters who depend on the Abraka Train Station have continued to express growing frustration and despair following its closure eight months ago, a development that has disrupted transportation and economic activities across large parts of Delta State.

The station, which was shut in early June 2025 over security concerns, serves as a major transit point for four universities and seven local government areas.

Its closure has left hundreds of regular users stranded, forcing them to rely on costlier and less convenient road transport options.

For many residents, the shutdown has meant more than a change in travel plans.

Daily routines have been altered, businesses affected, and students and workers compelled to endure longer, more stressful journeys.

Regular passengers said the uncertainty surrounding the station’s reopening has deepened the sense of gloom within the affected communities.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) had maintained that the resumption of services at the station depends on a favourable security assessment by the police.

While acknowledging the importance of police oversight in safeguarding lives and property, concerned stakeholders argue that dependence on a single security report may be contributing to unnecessary delays.

Security experts noted that different agencies often approach risk assessment from varying operational perspectives.

As a result, a process that excludes broader inter-agency collaboration may slow decision-making on critical public infrastructure.

Observers have therefore called for a more inclusive and coordinated security review involving multiple security agencies.

Such collaboration, they argue, would allow for a more comprehensive evaluation of risks and help restore public confidence in the safety of the rail facility.

Residents and commuters have renewed their appeal to the management of the Nigerian Railway Corporation to act swiftly and compassionately.

They insisted that reopening the Abraka Train Station would not only ease transportation challenges but also restore hope to communities whose daily lives have remained on hold for months.
