The Bayelsa State Government and the legal community on Thursday gathered at the State High Court complex in Yenagoa to pay final institutional respects to the late Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, during a valedictory court session held in his honour.
Governor Douye Diri, accompanied by his predecessor, Senator Seriake Dickson, led a host of senior government officials, jurists, and members of the Bar to the solemn ceremony, which reflected the depth of loss felt across the state.
Addressing the gathering, Governor Diri spoke with visible emotion, describing the death of his deputy as a personal and professional blow he was still struggling to accept.
He recalled the pivotal role the late Ewhrudjakpo played as head of his legal team during critical election battles, noting that his commitment, brilliance, and loyalty were instrumental to their victories.
The governor expressed gratitude to the Judiciary and members of the Nigerian Bar Association, particularly the Yenagoa and Sagbama branches, for honouring a man he described as a pillar of support and counsel.
On his part, Senator Dickson expressed gratitude to individuals who took the time to pay tribute to the late Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State.
He commended friends, colleagues, and well-wishers for honouring the memory of the late official, describing their gestures as a meaningful show of respect and solidarity with the state and the bereaved family.
In her remarks, the Chief Judge of Bayelsa State, Justice Matilda Abrakasa-Ayemieye, said the passing of Ewhrudjakpo had created a profound void within the state and the legal profession.
She highlighted his enduring impact on legal practice and jurisprudence in Bayelsa, stressing that his intellectual contributions and passion for justice would be remembered for generations.
Also speaking, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Biriyai Dambo, SAN, described the late deputy governor as a lawyer of rare integrity and exceptional intellect.
According to him, Ewhrudjakpo exemplified professionalism and discipline, earning respect far beyond the borders of the state.
Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Yenagoa Branch, Mr. Clement Kekemeke, echoed similar sentiments, praising the late deputy governor for his wisdom, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to the advancement of the legal profession.
The valedictory session was attended by the deceased’s wife, Mrs. Ewhrudjakpo, and their children, as well as members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, serving and retired judges, senior advocates, and other top government functionaries.
The atmosphere throughout the session was solemn, reflecting the collective grief and respect for a man widely regarded as a distinguished lawyer, public servant, and statesman.
