Russia denies recruiting Nigerians for Ukraine war

The Russian Ambassador to Nigeria, Andrey Podyelyshev, has denied claims that Nigerians are being recruited to fight in Ukraine.
He described the reports as misleading and unrelated to the Russian government.
Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday in Abuja, the envoy said there is no state-sponsored recruitment programme involving Nigerians.
The remarks were delivered during a diplomatic briefing in Abuja.
The event, titled “Russia in a Multipolar World Order: African Perspective,” marked Russia’s Diplomatic Service Day.
He stressed that any such activity would be illegal and not sanctioned by Moscow.
According to him, if individuals are attempting recruitment, they are acting independently.
He said credible information on such activities would be forwarded to Russian law enforcement agencies.
Podyelyshev explained that military cooperation between Nigeria and Russia follows formal bilateral agreements.
He noted that collaboration focuses on military-technical support, training and potential equipment supply.
The ambassador described Nigeria as one of Russia’s key partners in Africa.
He said relations with Abuja influence Moscow’s broader engagement in West Africa.
Podyelyshev reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to a multipolar global system.
He said such a system should be anchored on international law and sovereign equality.
The envoy also called for reforms in global institutions.
He advocated greater African representation on the United Nations Security Council.
Highlighting bilateral ties, he cited cooperation in defence, education and energy.
He also mentioned partnerships in healthcare and security.
Plans for a Centre for Nuclear Science and Technology were referenced.
The ambassador added that scholarship opportunities for Nigerian students in Russia would expand.
