30 Nigerian referees receive FIFA badges

Abuja witnessed the decoration of 30 Nigerian referees with FIFA badges on Monday, as NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, MON, urged strict integrity in the performance of their officiating duties.

Gusau reminded referees that increased live broadcasts of league matches mean their performances would face intense scrutiny locally and internationally.

“Our league matches are now televised. The Shooting Stars vs Warri Wolves game aired live on eleven stations.

”By season’s end, coverage will rise to thirty stations, making officiating visible worldwide,” he said.

He stressed zero tolerance for misconduct, warning that any referee found wanting in integrity or performance would have their FIFA badge withdrawn immediately.

“There is no hiding now. Any referee acting improperly will have their badge revoked without exception. We must take this seriously,” Gusau declared.

Gusau further instructed that complaints about referees’ conduct must be addressed immediately after matches, adding that all disciplinary decisions are final.

“Do not assume anyone will intercede for you. Misbehaving referees must voluntarily relinquish their uniform, as they will no longer belong to this officiating community,” he warned.

The NFF President highlighted the link between quality officiating and league commercial prospects, noting that poor performances could discourage sponsors and undermine visibility efforts.

“Our aim is to enhance the league’s welfare. Poor officiating could scare away sponsors, but our new TV deal will improve nationwide visibility through live broadcasts,” he added.

NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, MON, praised Nigerian referees’ competence, drawing from his experience as CAF and FIFA match commissioner.

“Some claim our referees are unfit for international matches. I affirm they are competent. I can distinguish deliberate mistakes from unintentional errors,” Sanusi said, urging officials to consistently perform at their best.

Of the 30 referees decorated, four are futsal referees, four are beach soccer referees, 11 are assistant referees, and 11 are centre referees.

Dignitaries at the event included NFF Executive Board Member Alhaji Babagana Kalli, Technical Director Coach Augustine Eguavoen, Benue FA Chairman Barr. Paul Edeh, Kogi FA Chairman Mr. Hassan Wada, and Acting Referees Committee Chairman Alhaji Rabiu Gusau.
