NAFDAC seizes N3bn fake cosmetics

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has uncovered a warehouse stocked with banned and unregistered cosmetic products valued at over N3 billion in Lagos.
The agency said the facility was located at the APT Trade Fair Complex and concealed within an uncompleted building to evade regulatory detection.
According to NAFDAC, operatives recovered 728 cartons of Crusader soap and 718 cartons of E45 soap during the enforcement operation.
Officials also found large quantities of Extract Gold whitening soaps, described as products prohibited by the Federal Government due to safety concerns.
In addition, assorted perfumes, body oils and cooking oils were discovered at the site and placed under regulatory hold for further assessment.
The agency said all confiscated items have been evacuated to prevent distribution into the market while investigations continue.
NAFDAC confirmed that the warehouse manager has been invited for questioning as enforcement actions intensify.
It warned that the sale and use of banned or substandard cosmetics pose significant health risks, including potential skin damage and other complications.
The regulator urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious products or storage facilities to the nearest NAFDAC office.
The agency reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public health and eliminating counterfeit goods from Nigeria’s supply chain.
