FG approves N2bn grants for new tertiary institutions

The federal government has approved N2 billion each as take-off grants for the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal Polytechnic, Abuja, and the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe, Lagos State, aimed at supporting their early operations and development.
In a ceremony held on Thursday in Abuja, Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa inaugurated the pioneer rector of the Polytechnic and the principal officers of the university, presenting certificates of appointment to the newly appointed leaders.
Among those inaugurated were:
Professor Nosiru Onibon, pioneer Rector of Bola Tinubu Federal Polytechnic, Abuja
Dr. Angela Ajala, Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE)
Professor Adeola Oshikoya, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe.
Speaking at the ceremony, Alausa emphasised that the new institutions go beyond expanding tertiary education they form part of President Bola Tinubu’s broader strategy to enhance access to quality education and build capacity in science, technology, and innovation.
“Every child in this country deserves access to the highest quality education comparable to global standards.
”The appointees were carefully selected based on their record of service and achievements across Nigeria’s educational institutions,” the minister said.
Alausa reminded the appointees of the critical leadership role they play in shaping the institutions’ identities and future, adding that their locations in Epe and Abuja were strategically chosen to harness regional human capital and economic potential.
He highlighted that the institutions would focus on technological innovation, renewable energy, climate change adaptation, disaster risk management, and sustainable research, serving as centres for innovation and talent development.
The minister also stressed the importance of teacher education, congratulating Dr. Angela Ajala on her appointment and underlining her role in safeguarding standards and expanding opportunities for aspiring educators.
In response, the newly appointed officers pledged their commitment to strengthening the institutions and contributing to the advancement of Nigeria’s education system.
