FIFA sanctions Nigeria, DR Congo over fan conduct

Global football governing body FIFA has imposed fines on Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo following incidents involving supporters during their 2026 World Cup qualifying playoff.

In a disciplinary ruling, FIFA found both countries guilty of violating provisions of its code of conduct during the November encounter, which DR Congo won after a penalty shootout.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) was fined 1,000 Swiss francs after Nigerian fans were reported to have thrown objects onto the pitch during the match.

The act was deemed a breach of Articles 17 and 17.2.b of FIFA’s Disciplinary Code.

On its part, the Congolese Football Association received a heavier sanction of 5,000 Swiss francs after its supporters were found to have used laser pointers during the game—an offence that contravenes Article 17.2.d of the regulations.

FIFA stated that the penalties were determined based on the severity and circumstances of each incident, adding that both decisions remain subject to appeal.

However, the disciplinary report did not address a separate protest earlier filed by the NFF concerning the alleged use of ineligible players by the Congolese side during the playoff.

The Nigerian football body had accused its counterpart of irregularities in the registration process of certain players, raising questions about their eligibility to represent the national team.

FIFA is yet to issue a ruling on the complaint.

Meanwhile, DR Congo has progressed in the qualification race and is set to compete in an intercontinental playoff later this month.

The team would face the winner between Jamaica and New Caledonia, with a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup at stake.

The sanctions highlight FIFA’s continued enforcement of discipline and fan conduct standards in international competitions, particularly during high-stakes qualification matches.
