Democracy Is Daily Accountability, Says Speakers Chairman

As Nigeria commemorates Democracy Day 2026 on June 12, the Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria and Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Dennis Guwor, has urged citizens and lawmakers across the country to strengthen accountability, transparency, and grassroots participation in governance.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Nkem Nwaeke, the Conference Chairman described June 12 as a defining milestone in Nigeria’s democratic evolution, stressing that democracy can only thrive when the voice of the people is consistently heard, protected, and reflected in governance decisions.
Guwor emphasised that State Houses of Assembly, being the closest arm of government to the people, bear a constitutional responsibility to enact laws that reflect citizens’ realities, ensure effective oversight, and promote true representation at the grassroots level.
”Thirty three years after June 12, 1993, and 27 years into the current democratic dispensation, our democracy has matured, but maturity must translate to results.
”State Houses of Assembly must continue to lead in enacting people-oriented laws, strengthening oversight, and promoting transparency in the management of public resources,” Guwor stated.
He further noted that in Delta, the 8th Assembly under his leadership, working in synergy with key stakeholders, has remained committed to advancing prosperity and good governance.
The Conference of Speakers Chairman commended Nigerians for their resilience and unwavering commitment to democratic values despite prevailing challenges.
He also called on elected representatives to use the occasion of Democracy Day to reflect on their mandate and renew their dedication to public service.
Guwor reaffirmed the commitment of the Conference of Speakers to collaborate with the Executive and other stakeholders to strengthen legislative institutions, improve the lawmaking process, and support policies that foster peace, unity, and national prosperity.
“As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us remember that democracy is not just an election every four years. It is daily accountability, respect for the rule of law, and service that lifts the ordinary citizen,” he added.
He prayed for continued peace and progress in Nigeria, while extending congratulations to President Bola Tinubu, state governors, legislators, and Nigerians on the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
