Group petitions Senate over NDDC youth scheme

The Anioma Youth Forum Worldwide has urged the National Assembly to launch an independent investigation into the implementation of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Youth Internship Programme for 2024/2025.

The petition was signed by the National President of Anioma Youth Forum Worldwide, Comrade Nnamdi Okwufulueze Ofonye, alongside other members of the group’s executive committee.

The petition submitted to the Chairman of the Senate Committee on NDDC, dated July 16, 2026, the group called for a comprehensive review of the programme’s execution, financial disbursements and beneficiary records.

The forum alleged that concerns had emerged from some participants and stakeholders over the implementation of the youth empowerment initiative, which ran from August 2024 to July 2025.

According to the petition, some beneficiaries claimed they did not receive the monthly stipends expected under the programme.

The group asked lawmakers to examine key documents relating to the scheme, including attendance registers, biometric verification records, beneficiary lists and payment details, to determine whether the programme achieved its stated objectives.

It urged the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on NDDC to conduct what it described as an “immediate, independent and forensically sound investigation and audit” into the programme.

The forum requested that the NDDC be directed to publish the names of beneficiaries and payment records within 14 days to promote transparency and accountability.

It also called for public hearings where participants, whistleblowers and relevant officials could provide information on the programme’s implementation.

The group further asked lawmakers to establish measures protecting individuals who may provide evidence during the review process.

It said any shortcomings discovered during the investigation should be addressed in line with existing laws, while requesting a clear timeline and regular updates on the progress of the exercise.

The forum argued that a legislative inquiry would help restore confidence in youth development programmes, strengthen accountability and ensure that resources meant for young people in the Niger Delta reach the intended beneficiaries.
