Abia launches electric bus scheme …. Okonjo-Iweala applauds climate-friendly initiative

The Abia State Government has taken a major step toward sustainable urban transport with the launch of its Green Shuttle Electric Bus Service, featuring 20 fully electric buses designed to reduce pollution and support climate action.

The inauguration took place Monday at the International Conference Center, Umuahia, drawing officials, stakeholders, and residents eager to witness the historic rollout.

Commending the initiative, the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, described the electric bus project as a bold and forward-looking measure in tackling environmental challenges.

She noted that while Africa contributes just three percent of global carbon emissions, states like Abia can demonstrate leadership by promoting cleaner, greener transport solutions.

“Abia’s deployment of electric buses signals commitment to climate responsibility and innovation,” Okonjo-Iweala said, praising the state government and partners for their efforts to improve air quality and sustainable mobility.

Governor Alex Otti, who led the launch, highlighted the program as a strategic move toward achieving net-zero emissions in urban transport.

He explained that the buses mark a transition from the previously used compressed natural gas (CNG) buses to fully electric vehicles, aligning with global climate targets.

The governor assured residents that all buses were fully compliant with accessibility standards for persons with disabilities.

Although the rollout will be gradual, residents will enjoy free rides until January to familiarize themselves with the service.

Each bus can travel between 400 to 450 kilometres on a full charge, with additional charging stations planned for Aba, Ohafia, and other parts of the state.

Addressing safety concerns, Otti confirmed that surveillance cameras were installed onboard to monitor conduct, and misconduct would be sanctioned.

The programme also aimed to reduce dependence on motorcycles and tricycles, offering a more comfortable and eco-friendly option for commuters.

Dr. Cosmos Maduka, President of Coscharis Group, lauded Abia as the first state in Nigeria to officially introduce electric buses for public transportation.

He noted that the project’s innovative design and inclusivity features. He emphasized that the initiative sets a national benchmark and expects other states to follow suit.

The Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Chimezie Ukaegbu, described the launch as a historic milestone for Abia, citing the programme’s potential to create jobs, enhance skills, and deliver long-term environmental and economic benefits.

The electric buses will initially operate along major routes in Umuahia, Aba, Umunneochi, Ohafia, and Ukwa West, signaling a significant step in the state’s efforts to modernise public transportation while championing climate-friendly policies.
