Obi urges Nigerians to reject Tinubu in 2027

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians not to re-elect President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election, citing what he described as a failure to deliver on key campaign promises, particularly in the power sector.

Obi made the remarks in a statement shared on his official X account on Saturday, where he criticised the current state of electricity supply in the country.

Referring to Tinubu’s campaign pledge in 2023, Obi recalled the President’s promise to improve electricity within four years or forfeit a second term.

“Tinubu in Jos confirms ‘Don’t vote for me’ prediction on power supply. During the 2023 campaign, President Tinubu made a clear electoral promise: ‘If I don’t give you constant electricity in four years, don’t vote for me for a second term,’” he said.

He argued that power generation has fallen short of expectations, noting that current output remained below 4,000 megawatts insufficient for Nigeria’s large population.

“When he took office in 2023, Nigeria had a power supply of over 4,000 megawatts and lower tariffs,” Obi stated.

“Today, the electricity power supply is less than 4,000 megawatts on the average, and Nigerians are paying higher tariffs.

”Nigeria currently has the lowest per capita electricity consumption in the world, with a rate below 30 per cent of the African average.”

Providing further comparisons, he added: “Africa’s average is 617kWh, Nigeria’s is 144kWh. This means that Nigerians consume less electricity than other Africans.”

Obi also referenced a recent remark by President Tinubu during his visit to Jos, where the President reportedly cited lack of electricity at the airport as a factor in shortening his stay.

“In a glaring display of disregard for promises and a lack of trust, he stated that one of the reasons for his 10-minute stay was that the airport had no electricity.

“‘You have no light here, I fly out in ten minutes.’ At a time when Nigerians are enduring days without power, our leaders cannot even stay a few minutes without it,” Obi said.

He urged Nigerians to reject what he described as ineffective leadership in future elections.

“Now is the time to stop incompetent leaders, those lacking the capacity and compassion who prioritise their own comfort over the well-being of the people and make empty promises,” he added.
