Palm oil producing firm, Okomu Oil Company PLC, on Wednesday, gave palliative to Internationally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Benin City, Edo, to cushion the effects of the current hardship in the country.
Mr Fidelis Olise, the company’s Communication Officer, said that the food items were donated to assist the IDPs who had been displaced in Delta in the last eight months.
The food items include bags of garri, beans, Indomie noodles and cartons of palm oil.
Olise, who handed over the items to Mr Bekewei Seifiyebegha, the Councillor for Ward 8, Ovia South West Local Government, said although the company knew nothing about the clash, it had to give to ameliorate the suffering of the people.
The IDPs were assembled at a centre on Osaruwere Street in Isiloko area of Benin.
Mr Robinson Uroupa, the company’s Community Liaison Officer, said the IDPs should expect more as the company had concluded plans to reach out to the community leaders.
The IDPs were persons who fled following the clash between Okuoma and Okoloba communities in Delta in January this year.
The clash led to the killing of 16 Nigerian Army personnel who were deployed to restore peace to the communities.
The reprisal response from the Nigerian military to fish out the perpetrators provoked the escape of many people from both communities to neighbouring states.
Those who escaped during the coming of the military now reside in Okomu in Edo, Delta and Ondo states.
