Obi dismisses opposition coalition rumors, focuses on anti-hunger, poverty efforts

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has clarified his stance on opposition coalitions ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Amid speculation of a possible alliance to unseat President Bola Tinubu, Obi emphasised his focus on addressing pressing national issues.
“I am in a coalition against hunger, in coalition against poverty, coalition against bad state of health.
‘:Politics for me is not about position, it is about doing the right thing,” Obi stated during a visit to the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Kubwa in Abuja.
He also stressed that the country’s priorities should lie in tackling critical problems rather than politicking.
“In this country, we talk about politics and abandon what we should be talking about. What we should be talking about is how we are going to educate the children,” Obi added.
Obi also made a financial donation to a school project in the diocese, underscoring his commitment to supporting education and healthcare initiatives.
He cited the importance of these sectors in national development, saying, “the more educated a society is, the more developed it will be”.
Regarding speculation about a potential deal with Atiku Abubakar for a vice-presidential slot in 2027, Obi dismissed such claims as “politics of selfish ambitions detrimental to the growth of the country”.
In a separate context, Obi’s interaction with President Tinubu at the inauguration Mass of Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican was seen as a courtesy call, with Obi reiterating that his focus is on fighting corruption and bad governance rather than personal animosity towards the President .
