Poor Sanitation: Commissioner slams UniCal over hostel conditions

The Commissioner for Environment in Cross River State, Mr Moses Osogi, has expressed deep concern over the poor sanitary conditions at the University of Calabar (UniCal) hostels.

He made his concerns known during his visit to the hostels as part of inspection activities of the May edition of the monthly environmental sanitation in Cross River.

Osogi described the state of the hostels as “appalling” and emphasised that the university must do more to ensure healthy living conditions for its students.

Specifically, he noted that the uncleanliness of these hostels was unacceptable and urged UniCal to meet basic environmental standards.

He emphasised that the state government was ready to support the institution in improving living conditions for students.
However, in his overall assessment of the sanitation exercise compliance in the month of May, he rated the exercise as high and impressive.
According to him, in spite of the break experienced last month due to the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), he is pleased with the compliance level in the metropolis.
Reacting to the challenges of waste management in the state, Osogi commended the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for the waste intervention initiative in the state.
He urged residents in need of receptacles to apply for the bins as they were intended for the benefit of the public, for effective waste evacuation in the state.
