Plateau assembly elects new speaker after resignation

The Plateau House of Assembly has elected Nanloong Daniel as its new Speaker, following the voluntary resignation of the former speaker, Gabriel Dewan.
Rt. Hon. Daniel, representing Mikang State Constituency and former Majority Leader in the 9th Assembly, was unanimously chosen by his colleagues during an emergency sitting held on Wednesday at the Assembly’s temporary complex, situated at the Old Government House in Jos.
Gabriel Dewan, the only lawmaker from the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in the 24-member legislature, stepped down as part of ongoing efforts to restore stability and foster unity within the state’s political framework.
The emergency session was presided over by Deputy Speaker Gwotta Ajang and took place shortly after a closed-door meeting involving Governor Caleb Mutfwang, former Speaker Dewan, and other lawmakers, aimed at defusing rising political tensions in the state.
Daniel’s emergence as a consensus candidate marks a new chapter for the Plateau State Assembly, and he is expected to resume deliberations in the coming days to address pressing governance and legislative matters affecting the state.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang received the new speaker and urged him to continue the legislative cooperation with the executive, ensuring a smooth transition and effective governance.
