David Mark resigns from PDP after 27 years

Former Senate President David Mark has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after 27 years of membership, citing deepening internal divisions, unresolved leadership crisis, and irreconcilable differences.
In his resignation letter dated June 27, Mark expressed disappointment that despite his efforts to rebuild and reposition the party, recent events have made continued membership untenable.
Mark highlighted the party’s current state, saying, “recent events marked by deepening divisions, persistent leadership crisis, and irreconcilable differences have reduced the party to a shadow of its former self, subjecting it to public ridicule.”
He emphasised that his decision to leave the PDP came after extensive consultations with family, friends, and political associates.
Mark announced that he has resolved to join the National Coalition of Political Opposition Movement in Nigeria, a coalition seeking to rescue the nation and preserve its democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Meanwhile, Mark has been appointed as the interim National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the coalition’s chosen platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
Mark’s resignation is seen as a significant blow to the PDP, given his stature and long-standing loyalty.
The development comes just a day after he, alongside other PDP leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, asked Nigerians to join in helping to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
Mark’s exit from the PDP and leadership role in the opposition coalition mark a major realignment in Nigerian politics ahead of the 2027 elections.
