Liverpool pays tribute to Diogo Jota in emotional pre-season friendly

Liverpool manager Arne Slot paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Diogo Jota, calling him “a champion” in every aspect of his life.
This comes as Liverpool returned to the field for a pre-season friendly against Preston North End at Deepdale stadium.
Slot described Jota as “a champion in everything” he did in the last month of his life.
He highlighted Jota’s achievements in his personal life, including getting married to his long-term partner Rute Cardoso just 11 days before his death.
Slot also mentioned Jota’s success with Portugal, winning the Nations League, and his contribution to Liverpool’s Premier League title win.
Slot acknowledged the difficulty of finding the right words to express the loss, but emphasised the importance of being true to oneself, just like Jota was.
He encouraged the players to handle the situation like Jota would, by being themselves and staying authentic.
A rendition of Liverpool’s anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone” was played before kick-off.
Preston captain Ben Whiteman laid a wreath in front of the away supporters.
Both teams observed a minute’s silence and wore black armbands to show respect.
Liverpool supporters sang songs proclaiming Jota’s greatness, comparing him favorably to Portugal legend Luis Figo.
Liverpool announced that Jota’s number 20 shirt would be retired across all levels of the club, including the men’s first team, women’s team, and academy sides.
This decision marked the first time in the club’s 133-year history that a player’s number has been retired.
Club CEO Michael Edwards emphasised the profound personal impact Jota had on his teammates, colleagues, and supporters.
