Atiku abandoned PDP after 2023 election – Josephine Anenih – edited

A former Minister of Women Affairs and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Chief (Mrs.)Josephine Anenih, has contradicted reports that Atiku Abubakar resigned from the party on June 14, 2025.
Chief (Mrs.) Anenih,  while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, said Atiku actually left the party after the 2023 presidential election, citing his lack of active involvement in the party since then
Anenih claimed that Atiku has not been playing an active role in the PDP, nor attended meetings, and hasn’t provided leadership despite being looked up to as a leader.
According to the former national woman leader of the PDP, “Atiku has not attended any meeting. We have even reached out to him.
“Even the women of the Board of Trustees went to him and we told him that the party is drifting, because there is no leadership and we look at you as our ‘baba,’ as our leader and we expected you to take action, to be in the forefront, to give direction, ” she added.
She further said, “If you ask me, I would say he didn’t exit yesterday; he had exited after the last election, because after the last election, maybe he held a conference once or something, and that was it. ”
Despite the party’s challenges, Anenih expressed confidence that the PDP won’t go extinct under her watch, emphasising the party’s resilience and her commitment to its survival.
Atiku’s resignation letter, dated July 14, 2025, cited irreconcilable differences within the party and its deviation from foundational principles as reasons for his departure.
Mixed reactions trailed Atiku’s resignation, with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde saying that those holding the PDP down were free to leave, while Minister Festus Keyamo criticised the timing of Atiku’s resignation, suggesting it was an attempt to draw attention away from Muhammadu Buhari’s mourning period.
Atiku’s resignation highlighted the PDP’s internal challenges and potential leadership crisis.
As a leading figure in the opposition coalition, Atiku’s move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) could impact the 2027 presidential election.
