LP reaffirms Usman as interim national chairman

The Labour Party has responded to recent comments made by Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the party’s Vice-Presidential candidate in the 2023 general election.
Dr. Baba-Ahmed reportedly referred to Julius Abure, the suspended former National Chairman of the Labour Party, as the substantive National Chairman of the party during a meeting and on Channels Television’s breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily.
In a statement issued by Ken Eluma Asogwa, the Senior Special Adviser, Media, to the Interim National Chairman, Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, the party clarified that the leadership question within the party has been conclusively settled by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
The Party cited the court’s judgment delivered on April 4, 2025, which nullified Abure’s claim to the office of National Chairman.
The statement said that the judgment upheld the leadership of Senator Nenadi Usman, who was the appellant in the said matter and upon whose appeal all reliefs sought were granted.
It also said that the Supreme Court’s ruling was clear and unambiguous, stating that the decisions of both the trial court and the court below recognising Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party were set aside.
The statement also said that the court also struck out the suit for want of jurisdiction.
The Party emphasised that the judgment was binding and must be respected by all members.
The statement emphasised the importance of respecting the rule of law and adhering to the Supreme Court’s judgment on the party’s leadership.
”While the Labour Party respects Dr. Baba-Ahmed’s right to hold the personal views he does, the Labour Party stresses the importance of adhering to the finality of the Supreme Court’s judgments.
”The party notes that acceptance of and adherence to the judiciary’s decisions is not a matter of choice but compulsion, ” the statement said.
The Party also reiterated its commitment to peace, unity, and internal cohesion as it prepares for its ward, local government, and state congresses, culminating in the forthcoming national convention.
The party’s Interim National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, called for calm and steadfastness among party members, urging members to remain resolute as the leadership reached out to all aggrieved members in the interest of lasting reconciliation and progress.
