Tinubu appoints new DG for national council on climate change

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Omotenioye Majekodunmi as the new Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC).
The appointment comes as a new development in the country’s efforts to tackle climate change and promote sustainable economic growth.
According to a statement issued by the Presidential Spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, on Thursday, Majekodunmi is a seasoned climate finance expert and environmental lawyer with over 17 years of experience.
His words: ”She has worked extensively with global and national institutions on renewable energy, carbon markets, and climate governance.
”Her impressive background and expertise make her well-suited for the role of Director-General of the NCCC.”
Majekodunmi previously served as the NCCC’s Financial Adviser, where she played a key role in shaping Nigeria’s climate policies and international engagements.
Her experience and knowledge of the council’s workings would undoubtedly be an asset in her new role.
Majekodunmi succeeded Nkiruka Madueke, the pioneer head of the agency, who was appointed by the President in June 2024.
President Tinubu thanked Madueke for her dedicated service and strong foundation laid for the council’s continued growth.
The President’s appreciation is a testament to Madueke’s hard work and commitment to the NCCC’s mission.
The statement noted that the appointment of Majekodunmi reaffirms the Tinubu administration’s commitment to tackling climate change as both an environmental necessity and a driver of sustainable economic growth, national security, and social inclusion.
With Majekodunmi at the helm, the NCCC is expected to continue making significant strides in promoting climate resilience and sustainability in Nigeria.
