NIS hikes passport fees to N100,000, N200,000

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced an increase in passport fees.
This was disclosed on Thursday, by Immigration spokesman, A.S. Akinlabi, who said the reviewed fees would take effect from September 1, 2025, and are about 100 per cent increment over the old fees.
According to the statement, “The review, which only affects Passport Application fees made in Nigeria, now sets a new fee threshold for 32-page passports with five-year validity at N100,000 and 64-page passports with 10-year validity at N200,000.
“Meanwhile, Nigerian Passport Application fees made by Nigerians in diaspora remain unchanged at $150 for a 32-page passport with 5-year validity and $230 for a 64-page passport with 10-year validity,” Akinlabi said.
The NIS explained that the adjustment aims to maintain the quality and integrity of the Nigerian passport while ensuring efficient service delivery.
The service reiterated its commitment to balancing quality service delivery with the need to ensure passport services are accessible to all Nigerians.
This development comes amid Nigeria’s economic challenges, including a high unemployment rate and the “Japa” phenomenon, where many Nigerians, especially youths, are seeking better opportunities abroad.
The diaspora community plays a significant role in Nigeria’s economy, contributing over $20 billion annually, according to the World Bank.
