U.S. reverses visa restrictions for Ghanaians

The United States has lifted visa restrictions on Ghana, restoring multiple-entry validity for several categories of non-immigrant visas.
Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Ablakwa, announced that Ghanaians are now eligible for five-year multiple-entry visas, thanks to months of diplomatic engagement.
The U.S. Embassy in Ghana confirmed the development, stating that the maximum validity periods for all non-immigrant visas have been restored to their previous lengths.
The U.S. imposed visa restrictions on Ghana in July 2025, limiting visas to three months, single-entry.
The restrictions were part of a global visa reciprocity process, aimed at addressing visa overstays and ensuring reciprocal treatment for American citizens.
The lifting of restrictions comes after Ghana agreed to accept West African deportees from the U.S.
President John Mahama explained that the decision aligned with the ECOWAS protocol, which permits free movement of nationals across the region.
Ghana received 14 deportees from Nigeria and other West African countries, marking a significant development in the country’s immigration policy.
The restoration of visa privileges is seen as a diplomatic success for Ghana’s government, reflecting improved relations between Accra and Washington.
The move is expected to ease travel restrictions for Ghanaians and boost economic ties between the two countries.
