Tinubu commends Super Eagles after victory over Benin

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s Super Eagles following their commanding 4–0 win over Benin Republic in their final 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying group match.

In a statement released through presidential aide Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised the team’s display of passion and grit in Uyo, calling the win a reminder of Nigeria’s football strength.

“The job is not yet done,” Tinubu said, “but I join millions of Nigerians in supporting the Super Eagles as they head into the play-offs.”

Tinubu assured the team and coaching crew of the federal government’s backing, urging them to stay focused as they chase a World Cup ticket.

“Nigerians everywhere believe in you — and so do I,” he said.

Victor Osimhen netted a brilliant hat-trick, with Frank Onyeka adding a late goal to seal Nigeria’s dominant performance. Despite the win, Nigeria finished second in the group.

Group rivals South Africa defeated Rwanda 3–0, finishing with 18 points — one ahead of Nigeria’s 17. The result pushed Nigeria into the play-off route.

Though missing out on automatic qualification, Nigeria remained a strong contender for one of Africa’s play-off slots.

The Super Eagles could still secure one of two available intercontinental berths.
