Wike backs Tinubu for 2027, dismisses presidential ambition rumours

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has debunked rumours suggesting he is eyeing the 2027 presidential race, declaring instead his support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
The clarification followed reports that some elements within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were allegedly lobbying Wike to run for president.
In a statement issued Saturday by his aide, Lere Olayinka, Wike described the reports as “lies from idle minds” and reaffirmed his commitment to President Tinubu.
“The Minister has made it clear where he stand, he is with President Bola Tinubu for 2027.
“Wike does not operate in hiding. He says what he means and means what he says, ” statement said.
Olayinka also criticised what he described as a deliberate attempt to discredit the FCT Minister, calling on detractors to “get better brains” if they hope to undermine Wike’s political influence.
The statement also addressed speculations about Wike’s participation in a secret PDP meeting to plot a southern presidential push.
Olayinka clarified that the only meeting held was on August 20, 2025, involving PDP stakeholders from the South and its outcome was publicly disclosed.
The communique from that meeting, titled “Re: Purported Meeting Of PDP Southern Zoning Consultative Summit”, was signed by top PDP figures including:
Party chairmen from Imo, Abia, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers States
National Vice Chairman (South-East) Hon. Chidiebere Egwu Goodluck
House Minority Leader Hon. O. K. Chinda
Several serving and former senators and legal advisers
“We know the intention behind these rumours. “But Wike’s political stance is clear from now till 2031, he is standing firmly with Tinubu, ” he said.
The FCT Minister’s unwavering support for the President comes amid rising political maneuvering across party lines as the 2027 race looms.
