Atiku urges INEC to uphold integrity in Anambra governorship election

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that the upcoming Anambra State governorship election, scheduled for Saturday, November 8, 2025, is conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner.

In a statement issued on Sunday, November 2, Atiku urged INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, to uphold the Commission’s independence and resist any external pressure that could compromise the will of the people.

He described the election as a “defining moment” for the state and a chance to restore integrity to Nigeria’s electoral process.

“The Anambra governorship election is not just another off-cycle poll. It is an opportunity for Ndi Anambra to end years of poor governance and reject attempts to subvert their collective will.

”Professor Amupitan and the electoral body must rise to the occasion and show the world that INEC has truly turned a new page,” he said.

The former Vice President also endorsed the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Nwosu Chima John, and his running mate, Nwobu Geoffrey Ndubisi, describing them as credible leaders capable of steering Anambra towards prosperity, stability, and accountable governance.

“At this moment in our nation’s history, Anambra must lead by example.

”The ADC offers a path to lasting peace, economic revival, and responsible leadership

“I call on Ndi Anambra to mobilize their families, friends, and neighbours to support the ADC and take ownership of the state’s future, ” he said.

Atiku, who served as Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007, reaffirmed his confidence in the electorate’s political awareness, noting Anambra’s history as a beacon of civic engagement and enterprise.

“Anambra has a proud legacy in our national story.

“Once again, the state has a chance to set the pace for a new beginning one built on justice, fairness, and progress, ” he added.

The call comes amid growing national attention on the Anambra election, widely viewed as a litmus test for the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral institutions and the ability of citizens to assert their democratic choice in a competitive political environment.
