Nigeria condoles with Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica over hurricane Melissa devastation

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed profound sorrow and solidarity with the governments and peoples of Cuba, Haiti, and Jamaica, following the catastrophic impact of Hurricane Melissa, which swept through the Caribbean, leaving widespread destruction, flooding, and significant loss of life.
In a statement on Sunday, Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, described the reports and images from the affected countries as “truly heart-wrenching,” noting the extensive damage to infrastructure, homes, and livelihoods.
“The government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria have received with profound sorrow and deep sympathy the news of the catastrophic impact of Hurricane Melissa on our sister nations, the Republic of Cuba, Haiti and Jamaica,” Ebienfa said.
He praised the national emergency response teams in the affected countries for their swift and courageous efforts to provide relief and save lives despite the extremely challenging conditions.
Nigeria emphasised its commitment to South-South cooperation and the enduring bonds of friendship and solidarity with Caribbean nations.
The government extended its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wished a full and speedy recovery to those injured in the disaster.
In addition, Nigeria called on the international community and partner organizations to rally support for Cuba, Haiti, and Jamaica, urging the provision of necessary assistance for urgent recovery and rebuilding efforts.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Government and people of the Republic of Cuba, Haiti and Jamaica, ” the statement said reaffirming Nigeria’s solidarity during this period of immense adversity.
Hurricane Melissa, which struck the Caribbean last week, has been described by meteorological agencies as one of the most severe storms in the region in recent years, leaving thousands displaced and prompting emergency relief operations across the islands.
